Welcome to the

York Wargames Society

So what is WARGAMING ?

Wargaming today involves the use of miniature figures or models varying in scale from 54mm high, down to 1/600th scale battleships. The 25mm and 15mm figure scales being the most popular. Games can be played with just a few figures or with several thousand, the figures themselves representing 1 man or model up to the scale 1 figure representing 200, all depending on the rules, and the size of the battle represented. Rules are now commercially produced to cover almost any period of history from Biblical armies to inter-galactic space wars. Some players prefer to write their own rules, and these are always (mostly!) received with an enthusiastic appraisal. The concept of wargaming is to recreate a period of history using figures or miniatures, and is played on a table with scale models or scenics, arranged to recreate the landscape. Battles can be historical re-fights or fictitious to give a balanced game or a hypothetical situation. Our Club has a considerable stock of scenery and buildings for use by members on Club premises. Monday Nights and Saturdays tend to be when wargames take place.

and Role Playing?

Role playing first appeared in the mid-1970's with the introduction of the game 'Dungeons and Dragons', based on the books of J.R.R.Tolkein although Fantasy wargaming had already unleashed Orcs etc on a gaming public a couple of years earlier. From there it developed into other timeless realms, Gothic, Horror, Star Wars and other moments in history and fantasy, fact and fiction. AD&D, Masquerade and Shadowrun are all popular with Club members.

Unlike wargaming, role playing gives each player a character with varying attributes, e.g. combat, stealth, magic, strength or knowledge. The players have to work as a team pooling their abilities to solve problems and defeat the enemy. The game is controlled by an umpire or 'gamesmaster/ dungeonmaster' who awards experience and abilities to the players, enabling their characters to improve their skills and powers within the game.

As in wargaming, models and miniature figures can be used to represent scale reality on the games table, and as in wargaming, the limit and freedom of each individual players actions are within the world in which the players figures interact, and not limited by a set route or by random dice rolls. Some Roleplaying on Mondays but mostly on Thursday.

We also have members involved in Live Role Playing.

and Collectible Card Games (CCG)?

Yes, we do this too when the interest is there.
